The purpose of the Mentor Program is to guide the participating law students through the interview/hiring process that typically takes place during the second year of law school. The Program is not designed to guarantee a summer job or even an interview with the volunteer mentor’s employer; rather, the Program will provide the students with a contact within the New Jersey legal community and hopefully, give the students insight into the practical aspects of the legal profession.

The success of the Program depends on the student and the attorney’s willingness to devote the time and energy to making the program work. The mentor’s role will include: reviewing and critiquing the student’s resume and cover letter, helping the student select an appropriate writing sample, discussing interviewing skills, and advising the student of career options and job strategies. The student’s role is to communicate with his/her mentor and to be available and prepared for meetings. Above all, cooperation, enthusiasm and professional conduct are pivotal to the success of the Program.

We look forward to your students’ participation in the Program. Students are asked to provide a current resume, all of their contact information, their preferred method of communication, their available transportation and their areas of legal interest. All of these components will be useful when the Committee meets to match students with their respective Mentors.
